About Hoxworth

Hoxworth Blood Center, University of Cincinnati, was founded in 1938. Hoxworth is now serving 31 hospitals in 18 counties in Southwestern Ohio, Northern Kentucky, and Southeastern Indiana. Annually, Hoxworth collects more than 70,000 units of blood from local donors to help save the lives of patients in area hospitals.

Challenges

The Hoxworth Blood Center identified several aspects of its operations that benefited from PERFEQTA, improving quality control and efficiency. The outdated system made it challenging to manage inventory, hold Hoxworth team members accountable for specific tasks before and after blood drives, and work efficiently due to manual entry processes across various locations. Additionally, they suffered from a waste of time and diminished resources due to excess spending. The team’s top priorities were reducing the cost of waste due to expired controls, increasing accountability in daily quality checks before and after blood drives, and replacing the cumbersome manual quality control process that was causing bottlenecks and increasing the chance of errors.

Solutions

With several critical issues to address, the PERFEQTA team had immediate solutions to several of Hoxworth’s problems by utilizing some of the platform’s basic functionality. Automating all formerly manual processes gave way to considerable increases in team productivity and efficiency. The full suite of solutions and results for Hoxworth included automating all manual processes for reference labs and donor services, eliminating the possibility of using out-of-date or expired control, and streamlining the review of the quality control process with scheduling and standardization.
